Day 26

Sunday was a day of rest for Burt and so it is for his bloggers.  Burt is well and enjoyed the day chatting with his family, free from rehab or illness.  He asked us to read any blog responses he may have missed.  The more aware he is getting, the more he appreciates them.  So if you have a bit of time, please post a quick note to him.

Just to add one amusing moment before signing off — Burt had been dressed in his new, appropriately sized sweat pants when the Stern family arrived.  A few hours later, after they returned back from lunch they found him in his hospital garb again and asked why.  He replied, “They got me all dressed up for dancing … but it’s Sunday and there’s no dance today.”

Tomorrow the dance begins again.

  1. Dear Family Stern,
I am following your progress carefully and we (the Mabel and me) are sending you lots of love and chubby, toddler cuddles. Minus the snot and the tantrums... jeez she can throw them!!!
Anyway we are well living in Bristol. Mabel is now 16 months and walking and making sounds which sound like chattering. She has lots of blond hair and is very cute. I am an exhausted wreck, but we're very happy. I'm now the owner of a VW campervan so we have enjoyed the summer cruising around meeting up with various friends and enjoying long summer evenings drinking wine. The winter is now approaching and I'm getting out of the house by doing an MA in Education at Bath University.
The family are all well too. Vicky and Jon are busy with the Birdy brood and other industries. Mum and Dad are much the same and dad is enjoying his world domination. Andrew is a couple of days away from completing his hand built boat which is an amazing thing. Tom is still very tall, working for Dad and again much the same.
Anyway, keep up the good work everyone. Thanks for the updates and we are all thinking of you. Mabel and I would like to book a visit in the future for her first long haul flight. Good luck with the rehab and keep strong.
    Loads of Love

  2. A guy sees an ad in the newspaper for a talking dog for sale for $10.
Intrigued, he goes to the address mentioned in the ad. Sure enough,
there's a dog out front. Figuring that he'd immediately reveal the
hoax, he says to the dog "are you the talking dog that is for sale?".
The dog says "Yes. I can't tell you anything about the sale, but I can
tell you about myself. I was a sled-dog in Alaska for a number of
years, ran the Iditarod and won it, and then I served as bomb-sniffer
in Iraq for several years. When I returned from Iraq, I did police
work until retiring not too long ago. Now I do occasional seeing-eye
work and I also do volunteer reading at a shelter for homeless
children." By now, they've been joined by the dog's owner and,
absolutely amazed, the guy turns to the owner and says "This is
incredible. Why are you selling this dog and for only $10?". Owner:
"Because he's a damned liar. He's never done any of those things!

A friend wrote the following response:
Reminds me of the one about the dog that plays chess, whose owner disparages the accomplishment with "Big deal! I beat him every time!

  3. Good to hear that Burt is making steady progress, enjoying a joke and working hard to help recovery. We both enjoyed the "bionic man" video and look forward every day to reading the blog and this got us thinking that perhaps the Stern family may consider producing a self published book of the blog when Burt returns home. The highs and lows, love, humour and Burts progress are so well documented here, both in the daily blog and in the friends posts. In many ways it reminds us of Tuesdays with Morrie, a book that Burt gave me many years ago and one that I have read many times.

Connie, Burt, David and Greg, we love you and miss you and look forward to when we are on the flight across the pond to meet up again.
